PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project entails the enrichment of the French Language training of Nursing students for their retention post-graduation in the institutions of the Outaouais.

The fact that the working language in most health care institutions is French suggests the need for English speaking graduates to have the necessary skills and competencies to be able to work in the Québec public health care system. Eligible students in the Nursing program will have their general French instruction replaced by an enriched French course, which will focus on Nursing. Support for special supervision needs is also provided when necessary. This course will be introduced in the regional health institutions through their clinical placements. By better preparing the students to work in the regional institutions, they will have greater prospects for recruitment and retention in the region.

SPECIAL PROJECT TITLE (2012-2013)

Le préceptorat au sein des hôpitaux de l’Outaouais: une pratique clinique novatrice et florissante grâce au Projet de formation et de rétention des professionnels de la santé

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Heritage College is the only cégep in Québec offering internships in the form of preceptorships for nursing students at the cégep level. This is made possible through grants received by the College within the Training and Retention of Health Professionals Project.

The goal of this special project is to enable the Nursing Program Coordinator at Heritage College to present the preceptorship approach and the results obtained at the Congrès mondial des infirmières de la francophonie in Geneva from May 20-24, 2012 by invitation of the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec. She intends to demonstrate that preceptorship is an innovative clinical practice for the teaching of nursing at the college level because it allows participants to optimize their professional skills and increase professional socialization.

The project will enable the Coordinator to develop the content of her presentation and prepare the PowerPoint and video presentation. The presentation will emphasize Heritage College Nursing Program values and support preceptorship-style internships incorporated at the end of the program as a means of consolidating the academic and clinical knowledge of its future nurses. Through the use of statistical data, it will also highlight the fact that student participation in the preceptorship program has expanded in the Outaouais because English-speaking students receive French language training for professional purposes courses through the Nurse Retention Project, giving them the language skills necessary to practice in a francophone setting.Ìý Moreover, figures will demonstrate that there is a greater retention of new nurses in the Outaouais because nurses who have done their preceptorship choose to become Candidate à l’exercice de la profession infirmière in the institutions where they interned.
