The Africa Field Studies Semester (AFSS) offers students an opportunity to study in East Africa for a semester starting every January. Courses are offered in both natural science and social science, and are taught in environments ranging from desert to tropical rainforest, from manyattas to urban centers. This 15-credit program is offered in collaboration with several partners in Barbados, including the University of the West Indies (UWI) during the summer. Æ»¹ûÒùÔº students live at the Bellairs Research Institute, while BITS courses are conducted both at UWI and Bellairs. The Panama Field Study Semester is a joint venture between Æ»¹ûÒùÔº and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama. It is a 15-credit program offered in the Winter term (January to April).

The program presents a hands-on experience gained through an internship/research project organized around multidisciplinary environmental issues.
