GAIHN emphasizes that global health is about local and worldwide health improvement, reduction of disparities, recognizing the health disparities that exist for marginalized and vulnerable populations, including Indigenous peoples, persons in situations of homelessness and poverty, immigrant and refugee communities, and other populations experiencing health inequities.

About GAIHN

Global health is the health of populations in a global context; Defined (by the Lancet) as “an area for study, research, and practice that places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide. Global health emphasizes transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions; involves many disciplines within and beyond the health sciences and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and is a synthesis of population-based prevention with individual-level clinical care.”GAIHN logo

GAIHN Mandates:

  • Education: To promote, within the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN), a critical understanding of health and the practice of nursing within a global context.
  • Service: To respond to the needs of the populations and engage with communities to achieve health equity and social justice for all.
  • Advocacy: To advocate for health equity and social justice for all.
  • Research: To develop and foster research of social value in global and Indigenous health nursing.

GAIHN Values and Beliefs:

The nature of global health and indigenous health nursing requires us to consider the set of values we carry with us. Some of the values and beliefs GAIHN-ƻԺ embraces include:

  • We believe in the importance of raising awareness and understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives.
  • We believe in the guiding values and principles of Primary Health Care and its fundamental role in improving the health of individuals, communities and populations
  • We value transparency, open and respectful communication and accountability.

  • We value equitable relationshipsWe believe that we have much to learn from each other.
  • We believe that people, acting together within diverse organizations and communities, have the capacity to bring about a better world.

  • We believe nurses strive for social justice and equity locally and globally

Committee

The Global & Indigenous Health Committee seeks to:

• promote, within the Ingram School of Nursing (ISoN), a critical understanding of health and the practice of nursing in a global context by:

• support opportunities for students and faculty to learn about and with vulnerable and marginalized populations;

• foster global and Indigenous collaborations for the enrichment of academic programs;

• enhance the global and Indigenous health “environment” of the ISoN

• To advocate for health equity and social justice for all

• To engage in service with the community to achieve health equity and social justice for all
