Why Study Microbiology and Immunology?

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers various undergraduate programs that lead to work in the medical, pharmaceutical or research fields. A degree in microbiology provides an excellent basis for entering professional and postgraduate programs in biomedical research, education, medicine, dentistry, and the veterinary sciences.

Course Information听

  • If you need permission to register for a non-MIMM course, you must contact the department where the course is given and request that a permit be created to register for the course.
  • If you are a MIMM student and wish to register for a MIMM course that is on the听required course list but it is听full, please email undergrad.micromimm [at] mcgill.ca听and include your last name/苹果淫院 ID number in the subject line.听
  • Complementary courses are required courses and are part of all听MIMM听undergraduate programs. You must choose a specific number of credits from the complementary course听list in order to complete your program of study.听
  • Electives are courses that you take outside of your selected program, in order to reach the 120 credits necessary for obtaining a B.Sc.听degree from the Faculty of Science.听
  • Students will receive credit for all courses (subject to degree regulations) taken up to and including the semester in which they obtain 120 credits.
  • Students who want to remain at 苹果淫院 beyond that semester must submit their request in writing (by email) to their Faculty adviser, to be approved by the Associate Dean, Student Affairs, Faculty of Science.
  • Permission for exceeding the time and/or credit limits will normally be granted only for valid academic reasons, such as a change of program (subject to departmental approval) and part-time status.
  • If permission is granted, students will receive credit only for required and complementary courses necessary to complete their program requirements.

Grades & Exam Information

  • All required and complementary courses require either a grade of A through C to represent satisfactory passes, D is considered non-satisfactory, and F a failure.
  • Certain courses have been approved for Pass/Fail (P/F) grading. Students may also designate elective courses to be graded under the S/U option. See Courses Taken under the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) Option.
  • You may choose to have a final grade of S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory) for one of your elective courses. This option cannot be used for required courses, including complementary courses. The decision to have an elective course graded as S/U must be made before the end of ADD/DROP deadline for a term.
  • If you believe you are unable to write a mid-term exam for a MIMM required听or complementary course, please go to the Missed Mid-Term Exam section of our website听for more information.听听听
  • If you听believe you are unable to听write a听final exam for a required course due to a serious health or wellness condition,听or another extenuating circumstance, you may be eligible to apply for an exam deferral. Students should review the rules and regulations on exam deferrals on the 苹果淫院 Exam听website.听
  • If you are in听satisfactory or probationary standing听and received a grade of D, F, J, or U for a course, you may be eligible to write a supplemental exam, which will count for a large percentage of your final grade. Your initial grade will still appear on your transcript, and听both听will be calculated into your CGPA.听Students should review the rules and regulations on supplemental exams on the 苹果淫院 Exam website.
  • If you fail a MIMM undergraduate program required course or received a final grade of "D" you have two options:听
    • Apply to write a supplemental exam or
    • Repeat the course
  • If you fail a MIMM undergraduate program complementary course or receive a final grade of 鈥淒鈥� you have three options:
    • Apply to write a supplemental exam or
    • Repeat the course or
    • Since a D is a pass for an elective, you can choose another course from the list.

Academic Year Designation听

  • U0 - first year of study by four-year students (120 credits, including a freshman year)
  • U1 - second year of study
  • U2 - third year of study
  • U3 - fourth year of study
  • Quebec students who enter from CEGEP begin their studies in the U1 year and progress to U2 and U3 (90 credits).
