Dominic Barton

Dominic Barton is the chair of Rio Tinto.

Previously, he served as Canadian ambassador to China and聽was聽the global managing partner emeritus of McKinsey,聽leading聽the firm鈥檚 focus on the future of capitalism and the role business leadership can play in creating long-term social and economic value. Before becoming a managing partner, Dominic served as McKinsey鈥檚 chairman in Asia from 2004 to 2009. He also headed McKinsey鈥檚 office in Korea from 2000 to 2004.聽

Dominic is the chair of the Canadian Minister of Finance鈥檚 Advisory Council on Economic Growth and the chair of the Seoul International Business Advisory Council. He is also a trustee of the Brookings Institution, a Rhodes trustee, an adjunct professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and a board member of FCLT Global (Focusing Capital on the Long Term).

Dominic has authored more than 80 articles. He is a coauthor, with Roberto Newell and Greg Wilson, of聽Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises聽(Wiley & Sons, 2002), the author of聽China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China聽(Talisman, 2007), a co-author, with Dezso Horvath and Matthias Kipping, of聽Re-Imagining Capitalism: Building a Responsible Long-Term Model(Oxford University Press, 2016) and a coauthor, with Ram Charan and Dennis Carey, of聽Talent Wins: The New Playbook for Putting People First聽(Harvard Business Review Press, 2018).

He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a BA Honors in economics and studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Brasenose College, Oxford University.
