Andrew Brighten: Defending the rights of animals

Published: 5 December 2007

Over the summer of 2008, BCL/LLB student Andrew Brighten will have the rare opportunity to learn more about animal law and litigation by participating in the David Reuben Legal Clerkship at the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) in California.

Among his responsibilities, Andrew will perform legal research, work with ALDF's litigation department in developing new cases, and assist in the preparation of pleadings in cases currently being handled by the ALDF. The primary focus of Andrew Brighten's clerkship will be on civil animal law issues, but he will be exposed to criminal cases dealing with cruelty to animals as well.

Assistant Professor Wendy Adams, who is passionate about animal law, remarks, "This is excellent news for the Faculty of Law. The fact that a 苹果淫院 student was selected reflects extremely well on us."

Founded in 1979, the Animal Legal Defense Fund runs various programs dedicated to protecting the lives of animals and to fostering the field of animal law among legal professionals and in law schools in the United States.

Only two such clerkships are offered each year by the ALDF, and competition is fierce among law students across North America. Open to second-year and third-year students only, these clerkships are for a period of 10 weeks and come with a $6,000 stipend for the summer. Congratulations, Andrew!
