18th Institute of Jurilinguistics

Coding/Decoding: Civil Codes and Jurilinguistics

Friday, August 23, 2024, 1:20 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (EST)Ìý

The Network of Jurilinguistics Centres—comprising the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation (Ottawa), the Centre de traduction et de terminologie juridiques (Moncton), the Centre de ressources en français juridique (Saint-Boniface), and the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law (Montreal)—is pleased to announce that registration for the 18th Institute of Jurilinguistics is officially open. Please note that registration is mandatory. Simply fill in the webinar registration form on this.

The theme for this edition of the Institute will be ‘Coding/Decoding: Civil Codes and Jurilinguistics. In line with the 30th anniversary of the coming into effect of the Civil Code of Quebec, we propose to explore the interaction between civil codes and jurilinguistics. Codification and jurilinguistics share overlapping objectives, such as—notably—the accessibility and intelligibility of law. As such, this year’s theme invites reflections on the role of jurilinguistics in the formal design, substantial elaboration, and implementation of civil codes. Our reflections will be enriched by a comparative perspective drawing on civil codes outside of Quebec, as well as on the common law tradition. Furthermore, the central question of how addressees of civil codes are taken into account will be analyzed in two steps: the elaboration of civil codes and their dissemination.
