Art History and Communication Studies (AHCS) graduate programs are shaped by the research expertise of our renowned faculty. Our graduate pedagogy embraces research initiatives within and beyond the department; it connects our students with programs, initiatives, and networks across the university and the city.
AHCS graduate programs include PhD programs and MA programs in Art History and in Communication Studies. AHCS graduate students are able to pursue a Graduate Option in Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies (IGSF) along with their primary degree. To date, there are no joint graduate programs between Art History and Communication Studies, but students may take seminars and work with professors in both areas.
Because we are a small department, admission to our graduate programs is very competitive 鈥� we receive over 150 applications per year in each program (i.e. both Art History and Communication Studies), and typically offer acceptance to between ten and fifteen students at the MA and PhD levels combined.听
Our priorities for admission are: 1) demonstrated excellence (as evidenced by your academic track record and your two letters of reference); 2) scholarly ability (as demonstrated by one academic writing sample); and 3) "fit" with the orientation of our program (as demonstrated by your application鈥檚 statement of research interests).听
