My research agenda focuses on the issues of exemplary teaching practice, teacher identity, and teacher education (pre-service and in-service), particularly in mathematics education contexts. My doctoral work investigated ways in which Grade-9 Applied level mathematics teachers, contributed to increasing their student engagement and thus learning. Multiple case studies were used to describe how these teachers considered academic strategies and elements within the social domain to support student learning.

Recent and ongoing studies focus on mathematics teacher development at both pre-service and in-service levels. Research with pre-service teachers (PSTs) aim to understand a variety of issues including: the beliefs of mathematics PSTs and their changing conceptions of teacher identity; a comparison of the experiences and beliefs of elementary and secondary mathematics PSTs; and the impact of various components of the teacher education program on PST development. Research with in-service teachers investigates models of professional development and implications of these initiatives on teachers’ beliefs and practices.

My research is a vehicle to analyze mathematics teacher education and directly informs my own practice. As an educator, I strive to develop opportunities for rich student learning by creating a safe and inclusive classroom, and use pedagogy to encourage student engagement. I often focus on methods that allow my students to learn through inquiry-based experiences and urge them to take ownership of their learning.
