Cartoon of the month

Cartoon caption: "I’m afraid you’ll have to go, son. When I accepted the terms on their website, I didn’t see that we had to give up our first born!"

Surprises may lurk in the fine print

We’ve all been there: You’re eager to download that software upgrade or new app, and instead of wading through pages of terms and conditions, you just scroll down to that shiny “I agree button.” But all that fine print may not be so fine later on, when you realize you signed away your rights of data ownership, or worse. Always understand what you’re agreeing to—before you agree to it.

Do you know where all your removable storage devices are (i.e., USB flash drives, external hard drives, DVDs)?

  • To protect sensitive information belonging to you or others: Ensure that your removable devices are kept in a safe location (i.e., locked in an office drawer, home or office location with restricted access, etc.).
  • Protect data on the removable device with strong encryption. We recommend using BitLocker To Go for removable devices. Read this article for instructions on how to use it.
  • When disposing of removable devices (or any kind of device), ensure that they have been securely wiped of data. Note: An Electrobac bin is available in the lobby of 680 Sherbrooke, which allows you to securely recycle small electronic devices.

Do you trust 700 of your closest friends?

Share information with those who need to know. Do 700 people really need to know? Realize that when you put personal information in an email, or on social media, you may easily be sharing it with more people than you would want to.

Properly store and dispose of confidential information.

Be careful of how you store or dispose of confidential documents to avoid privacy breaches. Your information can be more valuable than you suspect, so you wouldn't want them to land in the wrong hands.
