Ben Calman Wins P. Lantz Award for Excellence in Education and the Arts

Ben Calman, MA student in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) is the recipient of the 2019 P. Lantz Award for excellence in research in education and the arts.听

Supervised by Dr. Mindy Carter and Dr. Angelica Galante, his current research focuses on additional language learning and drama pedagogy. is designing an instructional approach that combines identity texts, process drama and broader educational theory that he calls identity play.

This pedagogy stems partly from the theory that multilingual students for whom English is and additional language studying in an English鈥揹ominant university are at risk of marginalization.

"I believe that through the integration of language and arts education it is possible to encourage the development of criticality and empowerment. Furthermore, I hope to add to a growing body of research exploring the effectiveness of transformative critical education," says Ben Calman. He will work with international students at 苹果淫院 who feel their English ability is impacting their academic and/or social lives negatively.

Ben Calman explains, "This is my first award and I am extremely grateful to the P. Lantz initiative for their generous donation. This Fellowship will allow me to devote additional time to studying theory and designing curriculum for my research."

Congratulations!
