A new ƻԺ-led study is now providing insight into the complex relationship between human migration and genetic variation, using a unique genealogical dataset of over five million records spanning 400 years to unravel the genetic structure of French Canadian populations.
Wed, 24 May 2023 21:47:03 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 301024 at /newsroom David Langlais /newsroom/david-langlais Tue, 07 Mar 2023 21:47:18 +0000 lawrence.chiang@mail.mcgill.ca 294888 at /newsroom Arezu Jahani-Asl /newsroom/arezu-jahani-asl Wed, 23 Dec 2020 21:18:19 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 254380 at /newsroom Guillaume Bourque /newsroom/guillaume-bourque Mon, 13 Jan 2020 20:29:46 +0000 frederique.mazerolle@mcgill.ca 196242 at /newsroom A new 'atlas' of genetic influences on osteoporosis /newsroom/channels/news/new-atlas-genetic-influences-osteoporosis-292859
A ground-breaking new study led by researchers from the Lady Davis Institute (LDI) at the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has succeeded in compiling an atlas of genetic factors associated with estimated bone mineral density (BMD), one of the most clinically relevant factors in diagnosing osteoporosis. The paper, published in Nature Genetics, identifies 518 genome-wide loci, of which 301 are newly discovered, that explain 20% of the genetic variance associated with osteoporosis.
Thu, 03 Jan 2019 15:36:56 +0000 laurie.devine@mcgill.ca 128200 at /newsroom Predicting the transmission of rare, genetically based diseases /newsroom/channels/news/predicting-transmission-rare-genetically-based-diseases-292335
There are only 25 people in the whole of Quebec at the moment who have a rare recessive genetic disease called chronic atrial and intestinal dysrhythmia (CAID). It is a serious disease that affects both heart rate and intestinal movements. A ƻԺ-led research team has been able to trace the gene mutations underlying the disease back to two European founding families who arrived in the province in the 17th century.
Wed, 05 Dec 2018 19:54:35 +0000 katherine.gombay@mcgill.ca 113017 at /newsroom Solving medical “cold cases” through genetics /newsroom/channels/news/solving-medical-cold-cases-through-genetics-267538

Researchers have identified the genetic mutation responsible for one patient's serious health problems, finally solving a medical mystery that has endured for over 30 years.
