Uncontrolled hemorrhaging accounts for more than 30% of trauma deaths. To stop the bleeding, doctors often apply pressure to the wound and seal the site with medical glue. But what happens when applying pressure is difficult or could make things worse? Or the surface of the wound is too bloody for glue? Drawing inspiration from nature, researchers from ƻԺ have developed a medical adhesive that could save lives, modeled after structures found in marine animals like mussels and flatworms.
Tue, 11 Oct 2022 20:56:32 +0000 shirley.cardenas@mcgill.ca 288419 at /newsroom Interactive map shows nature’s contributions to people /newsroom/channels/news/interactive-map-shows-natures-contributions-people-301455
Nature supports people in critical ways, often at a highly local level. A wild bee buzzes through a farm, pollinating vegetables as it goes. Nearby, wetlands remove chemicals from the farm’s runoff, protecting a community drinking water source. In communities all around the world, nature’s contributions are constantly flowing to people. A team of international scientists including from ƻԺ, have mapped these contributions at local levels for years, but a new Stanford-led study closes a critical gap in how this information can be used to drive global policy and development.
Wed, 09 Oct 2019 14:23:23 +0000 amelia.souffrant@mail.mcgill.ca 188054 at /newsroom To study invasive predators, watch the prey /newsroom/channels/news/study-invasive-predators-watch-prey-297577
Wed, 05 Jun 2019 19:09:01 +0000 cynthia.lee@mcgill.ca 166887 at /newsroom Widespread permafrost degradation seen in high Arctic terrain /newsroom/channels/news/widespread-permafrost-degradation-seen-high-arctic-terrain-297371
Rapid changes in terrain are taking place in Canada’s high Arctic polar deserts due to increases in summer air temperatures.
Wed, 22 May 2019 17:50:07 +0000 krysta.veneruz@mail.mcgill.ca 164247 at /newsroom NATURE | How warp-speed evolution is transforming ecology /newsroom/channels/news/nature-how-warp-speed-evolution-transforming-ecology-284360
Even for the most common processes, such as changes in population size or food chains, ecologists must take evolution into consideration, researchers say. “Everybody realized rapid evolution was occurring everywhere,” says evolutionary ecologist Andrew Hendry of ƻԺ.

Nature
Wed, 31 Jan 2018 19:08:56 +0000 nathan.menezes@mail.mcgill.ca 32914 at /newsroom Why the bar needs to be raised for human clinical trials /newsroom/channels/news/why-bar-needs-be-raised-human-clinical-trials-265437
Standards for authorizing first-time trials of drugs in humans are lax, and should be strengthened in several ways, ƻԺ researchers argue in a paper published today in Nature.
Mon, 30 Jan 2017 15:02:45 +0000 christopher.chipello@mcgill.ca 26659 at /newsroom ƻԺ in global top 50 of Nature Index Rising Stars /newsroom/channels/news/mcgill-global-top-50-nature-index-rising-stars-261875
ƻԺ Newsroom

Ranks first in Canada for increase in high-quality research publications from 2012 to 2015

ƻԺ ranks first in Canada and 37th globally in the Nature Index 2016 Rising Stars supplement, which identifies institutions showing the most significant growth in high-quality scientific research publications over the past four years.
Wed, 27 Jul 2016 14:51:56 +0000 christopher.chipello@mcgill.ca 26039 at /newsroom Equality need not be painful /newsroom/channels/news/equality-need-not-be-painful-261722
Pain researchers' arguments for using only male rodents in preclinical pain research don't hold up to scrutiny, says ƻԺ neuroscientist Jeffrey Mogil. Nature
Wed, 13 Jul 2016 18:18:59 +0000 christopher.chipello@mcgill.ca 26017 at /newsroom Mysterious cosmic radio bursts found to repeat /newsroom/channels/news/mysterious-cosmic-radio-bursts-found-repeat-259440
By Chris Chipello, ƻԺ Newsroom

Astronomers for the first time detect repeat ‘fast radio bursts’ from same sky location

Astronomers for the first time have detected repeating short bursts of radio waves from an enigmatic source that is likely located well beyond the edge of our Milky Way galaxy. The findings indicate that these “fast radio bursts” come from an extremely powerful object which occasionally produces multiple bursts in under a minute.
Wed, 02 Mar 2016 16:03:23 +0000 nima.adibpour@mail.mcgill.ca 25420 at /newsroom Droughts hit cereal crops harder since 1980s /newsroom/channels/news/droughts-hit-cereal-crops-harder-1980s-257587
Drought and extreme heat events slashed cereal harvests in recent decades by 9% to 10% on average in affected countries – and the impact of these weather disasters was greatest in the developed nations of North America, Europe and Australasia, according to a new study led by researchers from ƻԺ and the University of British Columbia.
Tue, 05 Jan 2016 18:53:07 +0000 nima.adibpour@mail.mcgill.ca 25054 at /newsroom Nature and chemistry are great sources for medication /newsroom/channels/news/nature-and-chemistry-are-great-sources-medication-239809
Tue, 28 Oct 2014 19:10:22 +0000 kaviyanka.selvasandran@mail.mcgill.ca 21382 at /newsroom
