In the opening session of the 2024-2025 Population Analytics in an Aging Society Training Program, we will feature four notable alumni from the CAnD3 program. The primary goal of the CAnD3 Training Program is to enhance the skills of Fellows in population data science and computational population social science, empowering them to make evidence-based decisions in their respective areas of expertise. The alumni participating in this session will reflect on their experiences with CAnD3 and illustrate how they have applied the knowledge and skills gained from the program to foster data-driven decision-making in in the academic, private and public sectors.

Maria Ahmed (she/her/hers)
2023-2024 CAnD3 Alum
Maria Ahmed is a PhD candidate in Sociology at Western University. Her research focuses on social and structural inequalities and their effects on population health. With a background in Commerce from Queen's University and a master's in Leadership & Policy from the University of Toronto, Maria's SSHRC-funded doctoral work examines health inequalities and how marginalized populations employ resources to counteract mechanisms of inequalities within healthcare settings. Maria has a passion for data visualization and making complex concepts accessible to the general public. Her doctoral research uses both quantitative and qualitative research designs to examine inequities in health and the impacts of public policies on disadvantaged populations.
Mila Kolpashnikova (they/their/she/her)
2022-2023 CAnD3 Alum
Dr. Mila Kolpashnikova is an Assistant Professor at Western University with a Ph.D. in Sociology from UBC. Their research focuses on time use among older adults, gendered division of housework, and North American and East Asian societies. Dr. Kolpashnikova was awarded the 2023 SSHRC Insight Grant for their work on unpaid work among retired older adults. Their current project investigates how the fear of falling affects older adults' daily activities, particularly domestic work and leisure. They have received several prestigious fellowships, including the Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Fellowship at the University of Oxford and the Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarship.
Jason Edward Pagaduan (he/they)
2021-2022 CAnD3 Alum
Jason Edward Pagaduan (he/they) is a doctoral candidate in Sociology at the University of Toronto. Their dissertation explores socio-cultural perspectives of aging among a community of racialized, older adults. Jason is currently exploring the pathways by which knowledge is mobilized for policymakers and stakeholders. They are also passionate about inclusive design and knowledge translation to make research more widely accessible.
Mari Aaltonen (she/her/hers)
2020-2021 CAnD3 Alum
Mari Aaltonen (PhD in Gerontology, Adjunct Professor in Public Policy) currently works as a Chief Researcher at the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL). Her work focus on aging, longevity, memory disorders and dementia, end of life care, health care, long-term care, health and social care policy, and informal care. She has done quantitative and qualitative research and has over 40 peer-reviewed research publications (published in English and Finnish). Her specialty is the use of register-based data and administrative data in research. Currently she is a visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Faculty of Social Sciences (Health Sciences) and Gerontology Research Center, Tampere University. Her work at the university is part of the research conducted at the Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE Age Care).
