Opera 苹果淫院 Wins NOA Opera Production Competition 2021-2022
Opera 苹果淫院 takes First Place in Division III of the 聽for their production of聽The Turn of the Screw聽by Benjamin Britten (libretto by Myfanwy Piper)!聽
Produced during the COVID-19 pandemic,聽Britten鈥檚聽The Turn of the Screw聽was filmed in collaboration with聽the聽Sound Recording Area聽under the direction of George Massenburg.聽The聽innovative production was in full costume, but in聽order to adhere to聽COVID-19聽health and safety guidelines聽at the time, was聽filmed without traditional staging,聽choosing聽instead聽to capture each聽singer in their own frame.聽Not only did聽having characters isolated聽fulfill necessary COVID-19 protocols聽but聽it聽also served to聽highlight the psychological and theatrical aspects of the opera.聽Schulich聽voice聽students thrived under the聽steady guidance of聽Opera 苹果淫院鈥檚聽artistic director,聽Patrick Hansen聽and聽music director, Stephen Hargreaves, who,聽together聽with聽the 苹果淫院 Symphony Orchestra聽brought the聽Britten score to life.聽The Turn of the Screw聽was聽thoughtfully聽selected聽for its聽small cast and musical ensemble,聽flexibility in location聽and聽duration. It聽was webcast live to an enthusiastic public in February 2021.聽The production is a聽testament聽of how, with聽clear vision and聽commitment,聽art聽will thrive聽in even the most聽trying聽of circumstances.聽We applaud聽the聽many聽imaginative and talented聽students and faculty聽who made聽The Turn of the Screw听辫辞蝉蝉颈产濒别.听听
Highly coveted, the聽NOA rewards creative, high quality opera productions at academic institutions and conservatories.聽Judging criteria includes聽musicianship, quality of singing, diction,聽characterization, production concept/execution and聽the聽ultimate聽quality of the production.聽Previous winners include Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Peabody Institute, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory,聽Moores聽Opera Center (U of Houston), University of North Texas, and Arizona State University.聽聽
