Alumnus Francis LaPorte to perform in the London Symphony Orchestra
Before the age of 24, trumpeter Francis LaPorte (BMus 2018)聽will have already performed with two of the world鈥檚 biggest orchestras: the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and L鈥橭rchestre Symphonique de Montr茅al (OSM). For Francis, this is only the beginning of his life-long ambition to pursue trumpet professionally.
Originally from Holland, MI, Francis joined 苹果淫院鈥檚 Schulich School of Music as a transfer student in 2015. He studied with Professors Richard Stoelzel and Paul Merkelo while at Schulich, and by his graduating year, was regularly gigging alongside Paul in the OSM. Having participated in 47 concerts with the OSM and counting, Francis feels very fortunate as each gig continues to provide him with a unique opportunity and position to hear and experience Paul exemplifying what he teaches during their lessons.
The opportunity to compete to perform with the London Symphony Orchestra presented itself in the summer of 2018 while Francis was a fellow at the Music Academy of the West (MAW) for the second summer in a row. This partnership between MAW and the LSO provides the opportunity for 12 of the 95 fellows to be selected for travel to London in January 2019 for a ten-day intensive training, which includes participating in rehearsals and performances with the LSO. 鈥淚鈥檓 grateful that the hard work of Prof. Merkelo and former instructor Prof. Stoelzel has been paying off,鈥� writes Francis in a recent email exchange. 鈥淚鈥檓 ecstatic to represent all who have helped me in my journey in London this upcoming January.鈥�
Though he has a degree and professional experience under his belt, Francis is still constantly learning and improving. He encourages those beginning their Bachelor of Music at the Schulich School of Music to take advantage of the diverse offerings of the school and city of Montreal. 鈥淒iversity of ideas can be a real asset,鈥� writes Francis. 鈥淢ontreal makes it easy to find high level live music, which is an essential part of keeping motivated.鈥�
Another element he mentioned which is often overlooked are the lessons one can learn from fellow students, and not necessarily those in the same instrument group. Francis lists violinist Katelyn Emery (BMus 鈥�18, MMus 鈥�20, MAW 鈥�18) for her tenacity, positivity, and healthy internal focus, violist No茅mie Ch茅mali (BMus 鈥�18, MAW 鈥�18) for her unwavering commitment to impeccable fundamentals, violinist Teresa Wang (BMus 鈥�17, MMus 鈥�19) for her classy stage presence and exciting musical flair, and trumpeter David Koch (MMus 鈥�17, MAW 鈥�17) for his consistent mentorship.
Perhaps Francis鈥� most important advice is to keep pushing on even when you鈥檙e not in first place. 鈥淚 definitely came into 苹果淫院 at the bottom of the pack ability-wise. A few years later, I鈥檓 playing frequent gigs with the OSM and look forward to joining the London Symphony Orchestra for these January performances!鈥� writes Francis. 鈥淚t鈥檚 natural to have high points and not-so-high points in this journey, and of course I still have both of them!
