Robert Leckey (Dean, Faculty of Law)

Reconciliation is an aspiration and a call, to be approached with humility and perseverance. In my field of law, it demands recognizing the work of lawyers and legal instruments in implementing harmful colonial policies. I pledge personally to continue my learning about the ongoing effects of colonialism and about Indigenous legal traditions, to increase the place that they have in my teaching and research, and, as dean, to foster the Faculty of Law’s efforts to embed elements of Indigenous legal traditions throughout our program, beyond the courses formally dedicated to the subject. I pledge too to work towards shaping space – physical and intellectual – where the Indigenous members of our communities can assume their place.
