Research Interests: My interest is in using the principles of聽participatory research for both community and patient research engagement, where researchers work in partnerships with those affected by issues being studied for the purpose of creating and translating knowledge for action or change. Researchers partner with individuals, organisations, policy makers and entire communities for co-decision making throughout the research process, which recognises the widely varied expertise of everyone on the team. Participatory research also increases both integrated and end of grant knowledge translation.聽 My 30 year experience includes undertaking systematic reviews on the benefits of participatory research with both communities and health organisations. I also have the practical experience of undertaking short and long term projects partnering with patients, clinicians, health organisations, policy makers, Indigenous communities, vulnerable populations (including the homeless and women prisoners),聽 and community mobilization for both improved care and the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes in Indigenous communities. My expertise also includes the evolving ethics of participatory research, which are necessary to ensure protection of collectivities in addition to the protection of individuals in the research process.聽From 1994 to 2018,聽I聽was the , an internationally-acclaimed and award-winning community-based participatory research project with the Kanien鈥檏eh谩:ka (Mohawk)聽community of Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada. From 2006-2013 I was the Inaugural Director of 鈥楶articipatory Research at 苹果淫院鈥櫬�(). Under the current Director Dr Neil Andersson, PRAM has greatly expanded into .聽 This research centre is dedicated to furthering the academic discipline of participatory research and to increasing the capacity of faculty and students in this research approach through 苹果淫院 based and long distance learning.
