Abstract

The BC Centre for Disease Control is a provincial organization that provides leadership in disease surveillance, detection, treatment, prevention, and consultation. The goals I set out at the beginning of my practicum included improving my knowledge in the areas of social environment and determinants of health as well as gaining practical skills in knowledge translation.聽聽

My projects were within the Population and Public Health service line and involved disseminating the methodology of the Social Environment Framework and the findings of the Perspective of Social Determinants project. The Framework is an evidence informed document associating community features to wellbeing. The team created a novel Collective Review methodology to systematically merge academic and grey literature with practice-based evidence. My practicum project was to document this process to increase transparency and provide a guideline for other organizations and researchers. Thus, it met my goals of increased knowledge of social environment as well as creating knowledge translation tools.聽聽

This practicum was practice-based within a large, multi-level organization. To do meaningful work in this area, one must work within complexity and be adaptable to feedback and different ways of knowing. There are many opinions within these large organizations and as a practicum student it is important to be open-minded and excited to learn.聽聽
