Pedagogy of Refuge: Education in a Time of Dispossession

Monday, February 10, 2020 11:00to12:00
Peel 3715 Coach House – Room 200, 3715 rue Peel, Montreal, QC, H3A 1X1, CA

Despite its chequered history in relation to human rights issues, South Africa has been playing host to peoples displaced and dispossessed by geographies of anger and war, poverty, economic meltdown and other human rights atrocities. Qualified teachers have been among the sizeable cohort of professionals seeking a new home in South Africa. Drawing on postcolonial theory, deconstructionist conceptions of hospitality and critical feminist notions of communities of practice, this talk reports on a qualitative study with seven refugee teachers. It explores their personal and professional experiences. The talk also explores the dialectic of refugee teacher as a guest and a host in classrooms in a foreign country.
