鈥淪orry鈥 limits success for women in the workplace

Excessive apologizing at work may hinder a woman鈥檚 ability to succeed professionally, according to Professor Patricia Hewlin. The habit of saying sorry, even when an apology is unwarranted, stems from societal beliefs about what it means to be feminine in the workplace and contributes to higher stress levels and feelings of inauthenticity. Professor Hewlin and her colleagues urge companies to examine how they can better empower women, rather than only asking women to change the way they operate.
