Quebec Will Abolish Time Limits on Sexual Assault Lawsuits

The Quebec government recently tabled legislation that will abolish the time limits on sexual assault lawsuits. Currently, the time limit for sexual assault lawsuits is 30 years. This change to legislation, which would allow victims to sue for damages no longer how much time has passed since the sexual assault, has been long sought after by survivors and advocates.

Quebec Justice Minister Sonia LeBel tabled the bill, a move which was applauded by all parties at the National Assembly. The bill is expected to quickly be passed into law.

B.C. Government Announces $10 Million in Funding for Community-Based Sexual Assault Services

Five men acquitted of rape because unconscious victim didn't fight back

A court in Barcelona cleared five men of sexual assault charges after saying the crime did not fit the legal definition of rape because the unconscious teenage victim didn't fight back.
Under Spanish law, a sexual attack can only be classified as an assault or rape if the perpetrator uses violence or intimidation. Because the survivor was unconscious, the five were convicted of a lesser charge of sexual abuse.

A ruling last year by a military court decided that for cases of rape and sexual assault that occurred 1986 and 2006 the statute of limitations would be 5 years.
