The KPE graduate committee (KPEG) is excited to announce that they are currently organizing a food drive, where all items will be donated to a women鈥檚 shelter in Montr茅al at the end of the Fall 2022 semester. Students, staff, and faculty of the department of KPE are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to hallway 101-A in the Currie Gymnasium building. We would like to remind everyone that any donation helps, and we are thankful to those who have donated thus far.

Congratulations to KPE鈥檚 Sarkis Hannaian, 3rd year PhD Candidate (supervisor: Dr. Tyler Churchward-Venne), for winning best oral presentation at the 7th edition Metabolic Disorders and Complications (MeDiC) Research Day hosted by the Research Institute of the 苹果淫院 Health Centre (RI-MUHC).

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a heterogenous lung condition characterized by chronic respiratory symptoms (breathlessness, cough, sputum production, exacerbations) due to abnormalities of the airways (bronchitis, bronchiolitis) and/or alveoli (emphysema) that cause persistent, often progressive, airflow obstruction. COPD is one of the top three causes of death worldwide, causing more than 3 million deaths in 2012, accounting for 6% of all deaths globally. It thus represents an important public health challenge. Erika Renda, KPE Ph.D. Candidate, recently had her thesis research titled Sex-specific myoelectric manifestations of localized fatigue during a multi-joint repetitive task published in the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology.

The beginning of the fall semester is a busy time for graduate students, both at the Masters and Doctoral levels. Scholarship and award application deadlines, from provincial and federal governing bodies, are placed throughout the semester, beginning as early as the end of September until the start of December. While these application packages can seem intimating, especially for first time applicants, there are some helpful tips that can guide applicants.
Taking place on October 16 each year, World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and well-being, as well as recognizing the burden of spinal pain and disability around the world. KPE鈥檚 Olivia Pastore, 3rd year PhD Candidate in the Theories and Interventions in Exercise and Health Psychology (TIE) laboratory, says that this day is important to recognize as an estimated one billion people worldwide suffer from spinal pain.
鈥楳ake mental health & well-being for all a global priority鈥� is this year鈥檚 World Mental Health Day鈥檚 (October 10th) main message. While the pandemic has, and continues to, take a toll on our mental health, it is of even greater importance to recognize this day and to seek any opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health.

The Biomechanics of Occupations and Sports Lab members, supervised by Dr. Julie C么t茅, KPE, recently presented their Ph.D. research at international conferences! Each member who attended was awarded a Canadian Musculoskeletal Rehab Research Network 2022 Trainee Travel Award. Matthew Slopecki was also awarded a Canadian Society of Biomechanics Travel Award.
