Update on occupation of the James Building

Published: 7 February 2012

Message from Michael Di Grappa, Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance)

Update on occupation of the James Building:

We wanted to let you know that the office of the Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning) on the 6th floor of the James Administration Building, as well as the James Building's first-floor lobby, continues to be occupied by protesters.

As a result, all employees who work in the James Building and Annex have been moved out of the building. Unfortunately, services to students, faculty and staff in the James Building are not available at the moment. Staff are working from home or a remote location where possible, so you may be able to contact them via email. We will update you as soon as possible as to the status of the services, and apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced as a result of the actions of some individuals.

The Provost has advised the occupiers of the building in a written statement that they are occupying the building without permission and requested that they leave now. Complaints will be filed against the occupiers under the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures, and the standard protocols will be followed.

The full text of the Provost's notice to the protestors is below.

"To the occupiers of the James Administration Building:

"1. This is written notice that you are occupying the James Administration Building without permission or authorization and that you are requested to leave聽now.

"2. Your聽occupation聽is聽preventing the normal聽activities聽of people who work in the James Administration Building as well as those of others, such as students and faculty, who have business there.

"3. Complaints about your actions will聽be聽filed against you聽and will be addressed in accordance with聽the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures. 聽We invite you to inform yourself about your responsibilities under the Code and the possible sanctions for violating it:聽 (/secretariat/sites/mcgill.ca.secretariat/files/code-student-conduct-discipline-procedures-2011sept_1.pdf).
