The Scottish independence movement learned from Quebec's failed votes for separation

The first time was in 1980 when Quebec鈥檚 premier,聽Ren茅 L茅vesque,听辞苍听pursuing a negotiated secession from Canada.听The key issue for the separatists was the preservation of the French language and culture.

...听鈥淢ontreal was the financial center of Canada [before the referenda]," said聽Reuven Brenner, an聽economics professor at Montreal's 苹果淫院. "Then about 400,000 people moved out, and all the banks and so forth. This is how Toronto became the financial center for Canada."
