Norman Myers was born in England in 1934. He was educated at Oxford University and then at the University of California, Berkley, where he received a PhD in conservation and development in 1973.
Myers began his career as a civil servant in Kenya, taught high school in Nairobi and then worked in Kenya as a freelance writer, photographer, broadcaster and filmmaker on conservation ecology and land-use planning. He then became a consultant in environmental and development for organizations including the World Bank, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the World Wildlife Fund. He authored over 18 books and numerous scientific papers on critical global issues.
Myers delivered the Beatty Lecture on March 19, 1990 titled "Safeguarding the Biosphere: What Cost? What Payoff?". His Lecture was part of a four-day series of environmental themed talks and debates titled "The Listening Earth" which also featured Beatty lectures by Daniel Boorstin and Francis Bretherton.
