Deepak Chopra was born in India in 1947. After attending the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, he moved to the United States and pursued a residency at a hospital in New Jersey. He then moved to Boston and rose to chief of medicine at New England Memorial Hospital. After becoming disenchanted with Western medicine, Chopra turned to alternative medicine and became involved with the Transcendental Meditation movement, leading him to establish the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center.
Chopra's first book, Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine, was published in 1989. His 1993 book titled Ageless Body, Timeless Mind became an international best seller and Chopra became a famous figure in the then-growing self-help movement. He founded the Chopra Center for Well Being in Carlsbad, California in 1995. In 1999, Time magazine called Chopra "the poet-prophet of alternative medicine" and named him one of the top 100 heroes of the century. In 2009, he founded the Chopra Foundation to raise funds to promote and research alternative health.
Chopra has held numerous teaching positions including as an adjunct professor in the marketing division at Columbia Business School and as adjunct professor of executive programs at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
Chopra delivered the Beatty Lecture on September 14, 2006, titled "Religion and Spirituality". His Lecture took place听at the Palais des Congr猫s de Montr茅al in conjunction with the first World's Religions after September 11 Congress.
